JOB SUMMARY:  Under the direction of the Supervisor of Transportation, assists in routing, scheduling, and assigning bus driver personnel; answers questions and records actions; responds to urgent telephone requests as appropriate; coordinates response to emergency situations by notifying appropriate personnel and outside agencies as necessary.  Operates a two-way radio.  Maintains computerized records, databases, and files related to the Transportation Department.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS/COMPETENCIES:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of personal computers and software-related job responsibilities. 
  • A minimum of three (3) years of successful experience or training in an office setting. 
  • Good interpersonal communication skills. 
  • A willingness and capability to work beyond the normal workday. 
  • Demonstrates effective written communication skills. 
  • Highly organized and able to track and meet deadlines for various reports due throughout the year.  

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The successful applicant will be using two-way radios, computers (both Mac and Windows-based PC), and multiple-line telephone systems to communicate with buses, schools, parents, and community members.  
  • The successful applicant is responsible for ensuring that all buses are staffed with drivers following established routes and prepared time schedules. 
  • Creates, updates, modifies and assigns bus routes as needed.  
  • Assigns bus stop and time information to new or moving students, and those with changing daycare status. 
  • Communicates with school site personnel and special education administrators regarding information and documentation related to transporting special education students for the purpose of resolving transportation issues and delivering services in compliance with state laws.  
  • Remind drivers of, and ensure compliance with, department rules and regulations. 
  • Maintain a variety of records, databases, and files related to the transportation department.  
  • Maintains drug and alcohol testing files.  Coordinates with Health Enhancement and supervisor to ensure all required drug and alcohol testing is completed in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.  
  • Communicates with supervisor and McKinney-Vento liaison to assign transportation for displaced students who are located out of their school of origin.  
  • Reviews driver routes for various information such as overload, time discrepancies, safety of stop locations, efficiency, and general notes from drivers.  
  • Prepares documentation (e.g., incident reports, inspections, student counts, fire drills, state reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.  
  • Inspect, process, and file drivers’ licenses, medical examiner’s certificates, and DOT physicals.  
  • Maintains Transfinder database.  
  • The position of transportation specialist requires that the successful applicant be flexible in order to cover the office in the absence of the other members of the transportation office.  
  • The position of transportation specialist requires alertness, extraordinary attention to detail, multi-tasking skills, and the ability to respond quickly to changes. 
  • Maintains regular, on-time attendance. 
  • Reacts to change productively and performs other duties as assigned.  


PAY & HOURS:  This is a 12-month position with a minimum of 37.5 hours per week.  Caroline County Board of Education, Support Services Personnel Salary Schedule.  Placement on the appropriate salary lane/step will be based on knowledge, experience, skills and training related to this position.
